Sandy sits at the base of the Wasatch Range, right where Little Cottonwood Canyon opens into the Salt Lake Valley. The city got its start in the 1860s as a small farming settlement along the Jordan River, but a silver mining boom in Little Cottonwood Canyon and the arrival of the Utah Southern Railroad in 1871 transformed it almost overnight into a bustling supply town of hotels, saloons, and smelters. (Even the name has two stories behind it — some say it's for the sandy local soil, others credit a railroad engineer nicknamed "Sandy" Kinghorn.)
Today, Sandy is one of the largest cities in the Salt Lake Valley, known for quick access to Little Cottonwood Canyon's world-class skiing at Alta and Snowbird, along with a mix of established neighborhoods, parks, and newer development.
